The X177 reticle provides 177 possible aiming points at 1/5-MOA spacing. That density creates a more precise illuminated hold than the older X96 system, but it does not make the underlying ammunition or wind input correct automatically.
The Ranging Claim Has a First-Party Conflict
Burris’s current product page advertises 2,000+ yards on reflective targets and 1,400 yards on deer hide. The specification table in the June 2024 Eliminator 6 user manual instead states at least 2,000 yards on highly reflective targets and at least 1,800 yards on deer hide.
We cannot responsibly choose the larger number merely because it is more impressive. For buying expectations, use the current public product page’s lower 1,400-yard deer-hide claim and remember that target reflectivity, angle, weather, steadiness, and beam placement affect real acquisitions. Neither published number guarantees a solution on an animal at that range.
The manual also documents range errors from environmental interference such as fog, rain, or mirage. In a range-error state, the scope can show default aiming solutions in 100-yard increments through 900 yards; that is a fallback display, not a measured target distance.
What the Scope Calculates—and What It Does Not

The wind distinction is the most important. Burris says the default wind display is the hold for a 10-mph, 90-degree wind. You can change that value in BurrisConnect, but the scope has no wind sensor. A displayed wind hold is only as relevant as the wind judgment supplied by the shooter.
Mounting: 34mm Helps, but Height Is Rifle-Specific
Earlier Eliminators locked the buyer into a proprietary integrated mount. The 6’s standard 34mm tube permits normal ring placement and makes eye- relief adjustment possible across more rifles.
Burris’s manual names 34mm Signature Zee high (420590) and medium (420591) rings. That is not a universal instruction to buy high or medium. The 60.1mm objective outer diameter, barrel contour, bases, action, and stock geometry determine the lowest usable ring. Burris says the installed scope must be level to less than one-half degree of cant for optimal performance. Establish eye relief at the shooting positions you will use, verify bolt and objective clearance, level the rifle and optic, then follow the ring and base makers’ torque sequence.
Setup in the Correct Order
1. Mount and zero it like a normal scope
The official manual says the optic must be mounted and zeroed before its advanced functions are used. Sight in with the exact ammunition you plan to profile. Changing ammunition can make the uploaded solution wrong even when the laser range is correct.
2. Install BurrisConnect before going to the range
Burris says initial app installation needs a high-speed internet connection. Once installed, the app does not require internet access in the field. Pair the awake scope from the app’s Devices area and confirm the Bluetooth symbol in the HUD.
3. Build the ballistic profile from real inputs
The manual calls for ammunition manufacturer, bullet weight and type, muzzle velocity, ballistic coefficient, altitude, temperature, and sight-in distance. If possible, use chronographed velocity from the actual rifle. If a bullet is not in Burris’s library, verify its data with the ammunition or bullet manufacturer rather than guessing.
4. Upload and verify the active profile
Every profile change must be uploaded again. Hold the Range button for five seconds to make the active profile name and display settings scroll through the HUD. Name profiles with enough detail to distinguish rifle, load, and version.
5. Validate beyond the zero distance
Shoot known-distance targets across the distances you expect to use. A perfect 100-yard zero does not validate muzzle velocity, ballistic coefficient, sight height, or the solution at 400 yards. Correct the source input rather than memorizing an unexplained offset.
Field Workflow
- Confirm the intended ballistic profile is active.
- Check the battery and whether density altitude is in Auto or manual override.
- Set parallax and magnification for the target.
- Estimate wind independently; update the configured wind value if appropriate.
- Center the crosshair on the target and press the scope or remote Range button.
- Read the distance and warnings; do not mistake a fallback display for a successful range.
- Move to the illuminated X177 elevation point and apply the required wind hold.
- Do not take the shot if the solution, target, background, legality, or steadiness is uncertain.
The remote has a stated 30-foot range. It can range and wake a sleeping scope, but Burris says it cannot turn on a fully powered-off scope.
Practical Limits Before You Spend $3,000
- Thirty ounces is only the optic. Rings and bases add more weight.
- Four power is the low end. This is not a 1x optic for very close work.
- The rangefinder needs a return. Fog, rain, mirage, small targets, and poor reflectivity can prevent one.
- Wind remains a human input. The scope cannot see wind along the bullet’s path.
- Profiles require disciplined data. A wrong velocity or BC creates a precise-looking wrong answer.
- The electronics depend on a CR123A. The conventional reticle remains usable without power, but the integrated advantage does not.
- Legality varies. An ethical-threshold feature does not override a state’s electronic-device rule.
